Diapers and Showers and Sodas, Oh My!

It's hard to imagine what a human being consumes in a lifetime. All the food you eat, the potatoes, the fruits, the bread, the chickens. And everything you drink, and all the clothes you buy and toss. All the furniture and appliances and toothbrushes and bath products and newspapers. The list goes on and on. If the rest of the world consumed at the rate Americans do, we would need five planets worth of resources to cover it. And it is indeed possible to add it all up. For a special called "Human Footprint," the National Geographic Channel calculated all the energy, resources and products used by each American over an average lifetime. Watch "Human Footprint" on the National Geographic Channel . Over the two-hour broadcast, the consumption of a lifetime is piled up and put on display. Got milk? It does a body good, and Americans consume 13,056 pints of it in a lifetime. A sea of 28, 433 rubber duckies represents the number of showers taken in a lifetime. A ...

7 subtle ways that hotels are becoming greener

Gambar
This is the final part of a three-part series that looks at green hotels — what that means , how it works and what consumers can do. In real life, you probably don’t launder your sheets every day, recklessly tear through individually wrapped snacks and toiletries, single-handedly consume a 12-pack of bottled water or let the shower run for 30 minutes. But forgoing real life in favor of indulgence and escapism is often considered acceptable — or even expected — on vacation. This goes far beyond not replacing your towels and linens every day, which has become largely ubiquitous. “At home, we don’t all wash our sheets every day,” Ave Bradley, Kimpton Hotel and Restaurant Group’s creative director and global senior vice president of design, said by phone. “So when you think about it, if people are staying with us for 2 1/2 nights on average, obviously there’s no reason to change the linens.” Today’s hotels are finding creative new ways to softly coax guests into becoming greener by be...

How to Reduce Chemicals in Bath Water

Gambar
Regular tap water can be a source of many chemicals from chlorine to fluoride and many others. At our house, we have a water filter for our drinking water and we also use filters on shower heads. Since most of our kids are not old enough to take showers yet, I also wanted to find a good option for bath water. I’m yet to find a filter adapter for a bath tub, but I’ve told my dad (an engineer) that he needs to work on one of these! In the meantime, I wanted to find ways to reduce the chemicals my children were exposed during bath time. My son had allergies and skin troubles since he was a baby (though we’ve almost completely eliminated them now) so this was especially important for him. Chemicals in Bath Water? In the 1990s, the Environmental Protection Agency acknowledged that a person can absorb more chlorine and other contaminants from bath and shower water than even from drinking water polluted with the same substances. Unfortunately, this puts children most at risk, as some child...

8 International Beauty Brands That Are Coming to the US in 2017

Gambar
Beauty brands not native to America have invaded the market over the past few years — occupying prime shelf space everywhere from Sephora to Target. But instead of erecting walls to keep outsiders at bay, U.S. consumers have wholeheartedly embraced the hair, makeup, and skincare crazes from foreign lands as if they were their own. (Perhaps beauty products are even better than an olive branch?) Korean beauty, for example, is such a big hit that several stores (like Nordstroms) have devoted precious square footage to the country’s cosmetic exports, while K-themed pop-up shops (like Glow Recipe’s Glow Studio in New York City) and subscription services deliver goods straight to your door (there’s Soko Glam’s Klog Box and Mishibox to name two popular options ) abound from coast to coast. But Korean companies aren ’t the only ones interested in expanding their territory and capturing the hearts (and complexions) of an adoring American public : Argentina, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, an...
