When we remodeled my Mom’s bathroom, we had to work fast. With some bathroom renovation experience already under my belt — and with the help of Aunt Mary Anne , who is a design whiz — I think we made some great decisions and the bathroom turned out really well. But, I also made some “mistakes.”  Today, I spotlight 9 things that I was really happy with. I’ll follow up with a post on some things I learned that could be done better … next time. First up: 1. Install a timer for your bathroom exhaust fan . We added this to both bathrooms — and the love for this little feature is already huge. No more forgetting to turn off the bathroom fan and exhausting all your conditioned air into the environment for, like, eight hours (guilty!) Note: You need an entire switch area for this timer.   2. If you have a pretty bathroom floor — consider a vanity with legs so that you can see underneath . Of course, you will be forever fighting dust bunnies , but I think it is well worth it. When I designed the en suite, I knew that I wanted the soaker tub to be the focal point of the space across the back of the bathroom with an amazing light fixture over the top because I love that look! I also wanted to conceal the toilet in its own space. I had seen them enclosed before and thought it was a great feature to be able to have someone using the washroom while others were using the vanity, tub or shower. We have two daughters, so I think it adds a lot of functionality to the space...

Towel bars are bad for marriages. Brian is constantly, after turning off the shower, asking me if he can use one of the perfectly styled towels that took me 3-5 minutes to hang (see above). And while I want to be super cool and say ‘yah, of course’ inside I’m screaming ‘ugh, can’t you dry-off with something else that doesn’t look quite so perfect. Both of us are slightly annoyed and the bathroom always looks a mess. Now because we put ours into wallpaper I probably won’t change it but if I could go back in time I would use wall mounted hooks . That is today’s styling PSA – rethink the towel bar and opt for hooks for a prettier, easy to keep clean bathroom (and a better marriage). * SUPER IMPORTANT UPDATE : Apparently in many more humid climates towels don ’t dry on hooks unless they have a lot of space.
