How do I prevent mold and mildew from accumulating in my bathroom? Mold and mildew can be located anywhere in our homes, but is most likely to grow in areas that are wet, humid and damp.  It is most commonly found in bathrooms, basements and attics, when a combination of water and insufficient ventilation are combined. One of the most noticeable areas you will find mold and mildew is in your bathroom because of the high levels of humidity confined in this small space.  Most commonly, mold and mildew are found in the corners and bases of your shower, under your sink, and along the walls near your shower.  Bathroom mold occurs because it loves damp, isolated and non-ventilated spaces. To find your bath's cfm, measure the floor area and multiply by 1.1 for an 8-foot ceiling, 1.25 for a 9-foot ceiling, or 1.5 for a cathedral ceiling. For example, an 8×10-foot bath with an 8-foot ceiling needs a fan rated for 88 cfm or more (80×1.1=88). Also consider the sone number, a measurement of sound volume. When we remodeled my Mom’s bathroom, we had to work fast. With some bathroom renovation experience already under my belt — and with the help of Aunt Mary Anne , who is a design whiz — I think we made some great decisions and the bathroom turned out really well.
