6 Upgrades Every Bathroom Should Have Considering how much time the average person spends in the bathroom, you’d think we’d pay more attention to how it looks. But if you’re anything like me, you decorate it once when you move in, then promptly forget about it as you tweak and shape the rest of the home. What starts out as a stylish space devolves into one that’s just serviceable, which is why nearly every guest bathroom I’ve been in has a bowl of dust-covered soaps and grids of mildewed caulk. Thankfully, keeping the powder room looking as spiffy as the rest of the house is fairly simple and doesn’t have to blow your budget. As interior designers point out, it boils down to making certain upgrades that have major visual and textural impact. Here are some improvements to consider: Lighting A bathroom is only as good as its lighting, so you’ll want to invest extra time to get yours just right. A mirror or two is a must, especially if your space isn’t exactly overflowing with natural...

Today’s Bath Renovation, Part 2

Danny Lipford: This week is the second and final show on the renovation of Today’s Bath. Announcer: Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford , the voice of home improvement , with projects, tips and ideas to help you improve your home. Danny Lipford: We’re right in the middle of a two part renovation called Today ’s Bath, it involves the renovation and updating of two different bathrooms, one being a very small master bathroom that was in this area and then on the other side of the wall even a smaller bathroom that was kind of the guest bathroom and we’re making them a lot larger by encroaching into this area which was once the master bedroom . Now, by taking up this space we were able to create this very nice custom walk -in shower than a very long vanity, two different sinks, and this cozy little niche for the whirlpool tub. Also the existing guest bathroom ’s a lot larger, a lot more functional and we had enough space left over by encroaching into this bedroom to create a very nice...

Bathroom safety for the elderly, Singapore News & Top Stories

Taking a tumble is no laughing matter for elderly folk. They can suffer head injuries or fractures that may confine them to a wheelchair. Falls in the bathroom are quite common, said Ms Shirleen Sim , an occupational therapist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital . While there are no official figures, she estimates that at least a third of elderly rehabilitation patients in the hospital have fallen in the bathroom. She points out the hot spots, and what can be done to guard against falls. SLIPPERY SURFACES The floor can get slippery from soapy water, so if an elderly person does not feel steady on his feet, he should sit on a chair while showering. Try not to let him sit on the covered lid of the toilet seat as the smooth surface can easily get slippery and cause him to slide off. Installing a vertical grab bar in the shower cubicle may be helpful, allowing him to hold on to it when he stands up to wash. One can also place non-slip mats in the wet areas of the bathroom. But lay them out proper...

All Dolled Up: The Enduring Triumph of American Girl

Gambar
And if you were a nine-year-old girl at any point during the last 30 years, you are almost certainly familiar with American Girl. It very well may have been an essential part of your nine-year-old girldom. From the beginning, from the time it was a mere kernel of an idea scrawled on a postcard, American Girl was engineered for nine-year-old girls. It all began when Pleasant Rowland, who was working for an educational publishing company at the time, took a trip to Colonial Williamsburg. Rowland had had a varied career; she'd been an elementary school teacher , a TV news reporter , a textbook writer. History and education were her passions, and while she was in Virginia, inspiration struck. She sent a postcard detailing her plan to her friend Valerie Tripp , a children's author. As she recalled at American Girl's 25th anniversary celebration , it went something like this: "I've been down in Williamsburg this week and had an idea. What do you think of it? A series of...

Design May 31, 2017   Share To create a winning master bath with limited square footage , assess the space, identify the client’s functional, aesthetic and stylistic preferences, and focus on incorporating unique and spectacular design details . authors Ellen Cheever   All too often, designers across the country tell me that, when offered a master bathroom project , the clients’ dream of an adult oasis is limited by the existing bathroom space and their unrealistic budget. While this may be the reality we all face with our “post Great Recession” clientele, let me suggest you not spend your energy complaining…but be energized by the challenge presented to you. Several strategies can help you create an exciting solution for a master bath space that must be completed within the confines of the available square footage . And, while they may not all fit within the client’s budget, these strategies will at least help you justify a recommendation to increase the initial budget! While the...
