The Houston Airport System is using technology so travelers can report if the bathrooms have dirty stalls, wet floors or no toilet paper.

The Smart Restroom program places devices outside the restroom where people can select a happy face if the restroom was clean or a sad face if it wasn't clean. After selecting a sad face, a second screen is displayed so the traveler can indicate his or her issues.

Smart Restroom also uses sensors to monitor passenger throughput and alert custodial staff after a certain number of passengers enter the restroom.

"Passengers have repeatedly told us through customer survey results that clean and modern restroom facilities rank at or near the top of their priority list," Mario Diaz, director of the Houston Airport System, said in a news release. "This pilot program is proof that we're hearing that message and working hard to meet their expectations."

The Smart Restroom program is being piloted in restrooms at Bush Intercontinental Airport near gates D9 and A17 and at Hobby Airport near gates 29 and 30. The technology launched in January and will continue to be evaluated over the next few months with plans to roll them out at additional locations.
