Silver Cloud Owner's Suite Review: The Bathroom
In more than two decades of travel writing, I suppose this is my first bathroom review. Yes, there are lots of jokes we could make about that together. If I’ve stooped this low does it mean my career is going down the toilet? Let’s not put a value on that until you learn more about this bathroom.
Psst! It’s Not Really A Bathroom
During Silver Cloud’s November 2012 renovation, all bathrooms were enhanced with new flooring, marble appointments and either a new bath-and-shower combination or a new walk-in, glass-enclosed rainforest shower with sitting area, offering a soothing, spa-like experience.
The Owner’s, Grand and Royal Suites were outfitted with a modern wet room bath configuration featuring a new rainforest shower that is separate from the bathtub. So my Owner’s Suite “wet room bath configuration” is much more than a bathroom. It’s more like a spa experience.
Of course, I’m having a little fun, but the wet room with the shower and tub is a big step forward for bathrooms on ships, which should be readily apparent to those viewing the photo at the top of this post.
The wet room section of the bathroom features a tub on one side and a shower on the other side. A glass door separates the wet room from the rest of the bathroom, er, spa.
The shower floor is comprised of teak. There’s also a teak bench and a set of controls, one for the handheld wand, another for the rainforest showerhead, which is recessed into the ceiling, and a third to control temperature.
All guests on Silver Cloud are offered a selection of European bath amenities, and this time I went for the Bvlgari products.
Bath sheets are exceptionally large and absorbent, the type that you don’t mind staying wrapped up in. The only reason not to do that is that the bathrobe, which actually fits all 6’5″ me, is even more comfortable.
I am impressed by the amount of marble in the bathroom. It covers the floor and the walls all the way up to the ceiling. There is one sink (but another in the half-bath) with elegant fixtures and well-lighted mirrors that never steamed over when I was on board.
I was impressed by how well Silversea executed its vision of the new bathrooms. engineering of the bathrooms. Designers squeezed in a lot, building in both form and function.
Of course, you’re not going to choose a cruise ship based on the bathroom. But what if I told you that your suite featured a spa? You’d think twice, right? So would I.
