Burien resident Gena Schubert is trying to help an elderly neighbor of hers, and is seeking Volunteers for a Work Party this Saturday, Aug. 26.

The Work Party is open to all who want to help – just show up to 12438 3rd Ave SW in Burien, WA 98146 (map below) on Saturday.

“My across the street neighbor is an elderly woman named Lynn,” Gena said. “She is wheelchair bound. She recently took a tumble and broke her collar bone. Right now she is in a rehabilitation center but will be getting out at the end of the month.

“Lynn has been living in her home for the past 5 years with no power. Think about it being stuck in a wheelchair and not having power. She has been using head lamps to get by.

“I know you are wondering why one of the agencies didn’t step up and help. She has COPD and some other ailments, her prescription bill every month is around $1500. So she had to choose one month either to get her meds or pay the power. She chose her meds. When she lost her power she was told that she made $8 a month to much to receive assistance. Another agencies solution was to condemn her house take her pets and put her in a home. She turned 70 this month and her mind is still sharp as a tack, so that was not a solution that she was agreeable to.”

Gena has set up an online GoFundMe page, where you can donate online here:

Gena adds:

“I am trying to get her power restored by the time she gets home. Due to the power being off for so long the city of Burien is requiring that I have an inspection done first.

The house has not been worked in about 30 years I have been told so there is a lot of things that need to been done. I’m trying to get as much done as possible before she gets home. I have put new flooring in the bathroom and things like that. But power needs to be restored first. A lot of things can’t be done until I get the power on.

There will be a work party on Sat Aug 26th at Lynn’s house: 12438 3rd Ave SW Burien, WA 98146

I want to thank Chris so much for coming and helping with the electrical, he is a god send.”

Supplies still needed:

  • Toilet, Stove, Refrigerator, Full size mattress
  • Handicap Rails for bathroom walls & shower. Raised toilet seat shower chair
  • Truck to haul garbage
  • Corrugated plastic panels to cover a 12x 12 area and lumber & fasteners to rebuild the frame of porch.
  • Supplies to repair a 5ft hole in interior & exterior wall.

“Also, please share this post to help spread the word!”
