Turn Your Bathroom into an Oasis of Relaxation

DIY Spa Day: Turn Your Bathroom into an Oasis of Relaxation

January 18, 2014 by Joe Ness

Some days you come home from work exhausted and all you want to do is park yourself in front of the television for hours. You’re tense, frazzled, stressed – desperate to turn your brain off for a while and relax. While Modern Family marathons are tempting, it’s times like these that you need to pamper yourself most.

Sure, going to the spa is an option, but you’ve just tossed your keys across the room and pulled on your sweatpants for a night at home. Plus, visiting the spa every time you needed to give yourself some relaxing “me time” would rack up a pretty sizable bill.

However, with a little upfront investment, you can create a luxurious spa atmosphere in the comfort and privacy of your very own bathroom. Here’s how.

spa accessories

Your threadbare wash cloth and drugstore facial scrub are fine for your daily shower… not so much for a relaxing, cleansing spa ritual. Take a trip to your local bath and beauty products store and look for some key items – facial masks, body scrubs, exfoliating pumice stones, loofahs, etc. If you prefer natural ingredients and have a DIY spirit, Pinterest is a great place to look for DIY home spa recipes and ideas.

Sometimes people assume that visiting the spa is a purely tactile experience. The best spas around understand that when it comes to relaxation, you get the best results by involving all your senses. How can you make your home spa look, smell, sound and – yes – even taste more relaxing?

Scented Candles – According to human biologists, scent and memory are powerfully linked. Choosing a scent that takes you back to a pleasant memory can help you relax. Lavender, rose, and chamomile are also thought to be relaxing.

Soothing Music – There’s no one kind of relaxing music. Whether you unwind to Bach or Billy Joel, putting on music you love takes you out of your own head and makes you feel more present in each relaxing moment.

Dim lighting – Depending on your bathroom, lighting some candles and turning off the lights may make your shower seem more magical or just dingy. When executed with care the right amount of tea lights or scented candles can transform your bathroom into a softly glowing retreat.

Flavored water – Before hopping in the shower to lather yourself in decadent bath products, try sipping on these delicious and detoxifying flavored waters.

Red Wine – When you need to bring out the big guns to settle your nerves after a rough week, turn to your favorite cabernet, malbec, or merlot. A glass of red wine will help you relax (plus, it’s packed with antioxidants).

If your bathroom is blasé, no amount of avocado facial scrub or red wine is going to help you relax. One easy way to add some elegance to a boring bathroom is to add some eye-catching texture, like a beautiful metal mesh shower curtain from Cascade Coil.

Sexy and elegant, Cascade Coil shower curtains provide privacy and a creative alternative to the ubiquitous glass door or plastic shower curtain. Cascade Coil shower curtains are made from woven wire fabric of interlocking coils of wire. The fabric flexes in one direction allowing it to gather as it is pulled to the side. Durable and long lasting – it won’t rip, tear, mold or smell.

Other ways to add texture include adding textured walls or tiling portions of your bathroom.
