The Flamin' Groovies - Rough Trade NYC
August 25, 2017 - Brooklyn

The Flamin' Groovies story goes all the way back to 1965 when the band began as the Chosen Few in their hometown of San Francisco, California. After a name change and a self-released 10 inch album called "Sneakers", which sold amazingly well, the band caught the attention of Columbia who signed them up and sent them into the studio with a big budget to record their first real album, "Supersnazz", on the Epic label. Their next two albums were on Kama Sutra (home of their heroes, The Lovin' Spoonful): "Flamingo", and the now revered classic "Teenage Head". This year's Best of NYC band is Baby Shakes, a power-pop/garage rock four-piece (there's a ghost member in the band) that knows how to have fun. The group wins this poll's grand prize: the cover of the spring 2017 issue of The Deli - we are looking forward to that issue! The band's catalogue is pleasantly varied, with everything from relaxed surf rock tunes to easy rock-n-rollers to borderline punk, heavy-hitters. Though the expert guitar work of Mary Blount and Judy Lindsay is apparent, featuring harmonization, synchronized riffs, and the occasional shredtastic solo, what really makes Baby Shakes so infectious is the raw force... The Rub - The Bell House
August 26, 2017 - Brooklyn

The Rub began in the summer of 2002, as a party where Brooklynites with good taste in music could come together, get wasted and dance until the wee hours of the morning. Even in that first year, it was clearly something special, garnering praise from the Village Voice ("best party in Brooklyn to dance sweatily to smart music"), New York Press ("best party in NYC") and many others. Ten years later, the original formula still holds true: great dance music mixed well, affordable drinks, and real people; no dress code, no bottle service and no celebrity DJs. Building on the consistently rammed club night, The Rub turned into more than a party, taking the show all around the world, moving hundreds of thousands of records and CDs, recording legendary mixes such as The History of Hip-Hop and racking up hundreds of episodes of Rub Radio. The Rub DJs have played shows with everyone from Gucci Mane to The Chemical Brothers, DJ Premier to Justice, adapting with the times but never forgetting the foundation of hip-hop, classic disco, funk and soul.

Bob Schneider (Solo) - Montgomery Hall
August 26, 2017 - Jersey City

Austin-based singer/songwriter/creative force of nature Bob Schneider has a guy in his band, Oliver Steck, who plays keyboards, accordion, trumpet and assorted whistles and horns. Also, Schneider notes, "Oliver also does a lot of dancing. He doesn't necessarily get paid for the dancing. He does it because he can't not." Apparently, the same could be said of Schneider in terms of artistic endeavors in general. He can't not be creating something. Sometimes it's writing songs — he has written some 2,000 songs in the past 16 years — sometimes it's creating videos to accompany some of those songs and sometimes it's making gallery-ready art, including paintings and collages. He also has played a wedding singer in an indie film, written two books and penned a rock opera that has a title that can't be printed in a family newspaper. Some of his musical mates even wonder when — or whether — he ever sleeps. "I love making things, so that's what I spend a lot of my time doing," says Schneider… "I do have periods where I feel like I'll never create anything that's any good ever again. The good news is, it doesn't stop me from creating things, and eventually that feeling will pass an... (read more)

Don Q: Coming to a Corner Store near You Tour - Gramercy Theatre
August 27, 2017 - New York

Born in the HighBridge area of the Bronx, NY; Don Q started rapping in the 5th grade. He would just rap back and forth with his homie who gave him confidence to make a dream out of it. He figured if artist like Lil Bow Wow could do it then he could. Unfortunately, in 6th grade Don Q and his friend went to different school so he lost inspiration. Thankfully a few years later in 8th/9th grade he picked it up. Don Q's quick accession to the top of the music scene in NYC has garnered him the attention of all the OG's and radio stations. He has worked with Fabulous, Meek Mill, Dave East, G Herb, A Boogie and more. He hopes to work with J.Cole, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, and many more in the future. Influences by The Lox and Jay Z, Don Q feels like he is up next up to claim the throne. Jay Z in his eyes is the best lyricist and The Lox held it down for the streets. To him they are the best to ever do it. Listening to them stressed the importance for him to be able to spit and be lyrical. This is how he came up and he can't switch up what he knows. Don Q feels like he is gifted and his new school and the old school vibes sets himself apart from the rest. He has meet The Lox... (read more)

"An anarchist streak still runs through me," says Lady Rizo, the singer-sophisticate who was once a teenage punk rocker. "I love the idea of claiming something that's uncool and making it authentic." To that end, the NYC-based artist has earned a name for herself by transforming nightclub-pop into experiences that are more soulful, more theatrical. A provocateur with an electric wit, Lady Rizo is a vessel for the spirits of Edith Piaf and Freddie Mercury. The New York Times once referred to Lady Rizo (né Amelia Zirin-Brown) as, "a formidable belter who can sustain phrases and notes even when sprawled on her back on a piano and scissoring her legs." They're not alone in that enthusiasm. Lady Rizo—who is releasing Indigo (Aug 18th), her second album—has collaborated with Moby, Reggie Watts, and Yo-Yo Ma, the latter on his Songs of Joy & Peace album which won a Grammy Award.
