Sugbutel Bed & Bath - TravelBook.ph Blog

Hostels are budget-friendly accommodations that usually consist of dorm-type rooms where guests can rent a bed and share facilities like a toilet and shower, a kitchen, and a lounge or entertainment area. Hostels are a favored option with backpackers, particularly in Europe, Australia, and Japan, where the capsule hotel was popularized.

Sugbutel is one of the first modern hostels in the Philippines. Opened in Cebu City in 2008, the hostel has made the concept of communal accommodations acceptable to the local market, targeting domestic tourists as well as the more savvy international backpackers who are used to such arrangements.

In keeping with the principles of hostel management, Sugbutel provides basic, no-frills accommodation options, yet ensures value through their clean and modern facilities and friendly service. The hostel's location, less than 500 meters away from one of Metro Cebu's major shopping malls, is also unparalleled, making commuting, shopping, and dining convenient for guests.

Most sleeping arrangements are in the form of bunk beds, to make economical use of space, and linens are usually optional, allowing guests to save even more on their stay. Recently, Sugbutel also introduced private rooms to give guests an option with more privacy, while still at affordable prices.

Sugbutel's accommodation options are classified into Business Class, First Class, Premium Class, and Executive Class. Business Class rooms are large clusters of bunk beds, ranging from 86 to 136 beds per cluster. First Class rooms afford more privacy, as beds are grouped in cubicles in clusters of six to eight beds, while Premium Class rooms are even more private, with only two to four beds per cluster. Each bed has an overhead light, a safety box under the pillow for securing personal belongings, a shoe ledge, and a 220v electric outlet for charging electronic equipment. All communal rooms have shared bathrooms with lavatories, toilet stalls, and shower rooms, segregated for men and women. The rooms are also fully air-conditioned and have free WiFi access and piped in music.

Executive Class rooms are private rooms that can accommodate from two up to five persons (with the addition of extra beds). These rooms have their own bathrooms with hot and cold shower.

The hostel has a number of shared facilities that guests can use during their stay. Accommodation floors have entertainment lounges with a home theater system and a desktop computer. An atrium, a canteen, a ticketing and business center, a baggage deposit counter, and a convenience store are also located on the premises.

Another facility offered by Sugbutel is its large Penthouse, which can be rented for seminars, training sessions, meetings, conferences, and other events. The Penthouse has an air-conditioned function area with a reception counter, bar, and pocket garden, and an open space outside this with a dramatic panoramic view of the city, the port, and the sea beyond.

With its prime location, modern facilities, and inexpensive accommodation options, Sugbutel has gone a long way towards making dorm-type hostel accommodations a mainstream option for budget travelers in the country.
