Dorm room dos and don'ts

HOUSTON - If back-to-school means back to a college campus for your child, you're probably shopping for dorm supplies.

Consumer expert Amy Davis explains dorm room dos and don'ts that can help you save some money and space.

Incoming freshmen move into the residence halls at the University of Houston on Aug. 17. While the rules of what's allowed and what's not vary from campus to campus, the basics are the same.

From Austin to Aggie land, or back here in Houston, living on campus can get a bit cramped.

"So if you have a microwave, there's no sense in me having one," said UH housing marketing manager Teeba Rose. "And we have roommates right next door, so we don't need four microwaves in this space."

Rose said students should coordinate with roommates and suite mates, and not just on appliances.

Shower curtains are provided in residence halls, and before you buy one you love at Bed,Bath & Beyond, you might want to make sure your roommates love it too.

"They (students) can fit several containers stored on top when they're under the bed," Rose said.

But before you buy out the container store, you should measure the spaces in your dorm room to see what fits where.

A checklist of must-have items should include:

3-M command strips to hang things on your wall
Surge protectors
Hangers
A dirty clothes hamper
laundry detergent

Most dorm room beds need twin-size extra long sheets, not the same kind you have at your home. And you'll probably sleep better if you buy an egg-crate foam mattress topper.

Some students like an area rug to warm up the room, and don't forget a table lamp.

Universal dorm room don'ts include: No hot plates, grills, griddles or anything with an open flame.

Since mama won't be here to clean up, while you don't need a lot of supplies, you do want to have something to clean the toilet, the sink, and have a dustpan and a broom to sweep up your room.

If your student plans to bring a bike to campus, don't forget to bring a bike lock to keep it secure.
