Mission's new consignment store; Winstead’s Metcalf closes

As a couple left Mission’s A Fabulous Find, a clerk called out, “Have you-all been to our new store?”

Sharon Choikhit opened A Fabulous Find in mid-2012, in a 11,500-square-foot space at 5330 Martway St. in the Mission Mart Shopping Center. It features about 175 vendors selling antiques, home decor, memorabilia, books and more.

In March, she took over a 9,700-square-foot space a few doors down at 5304 Martway for One of a Kind Home Furnishings & Fashion, selling consignment furniture (new lines, vintage and antique), as well as home decor and accessories, and new women’s clothing, jewelry, accessories and gifts.

The store recently had a wood fringe chandelier for $740 and a mantel clock for $545 (if you break it, you buy it, a tag warns), along with red flowered Sur La Table dinner plates handcrafted in Italy, a wine cabinet (or bathroom storage cabinet, a tag suggests), a roll top desk, pewter server, a suitcase chair, alphabet bamboo rug and much more.

People with furniture or home decor items that they want to sell can bring in a photo for Choikhit to check out.

“The items have to be in mint condition, no stains, no gouges. We have been very selective. We want something that is one of a kind, unusual,” she said.

Choikhit takes 40 percent of the sales price. In return, the consigners don’t have to spend money on advertising, field phone calls or have strangers coming to their house to see the items.

Stanford’s Comedy Club moves, again

Stanford’s Comedy Club left the Legends Outlets Kansas City in 2014 for a spot in Overland Park. In late 2016 it returned to the same Legends spot at 1867 Village West Parkway, Suite D-211.

Now it’s leaving again.

“We had a great eight years there before we came back,” said Craig Glazer, marketing director. “But they really didn’t have that adult crowd there at night. By the time we were open at night there weren’t that many people there. When it is busy it seems to be about the shopping and mom and dad and a bunch of kids getting clothing.”

It closed in the Legends Outlets in July and plans to open at 813 Walnut St. in early September as Stanfords 813. The Tiger Tail formerly occupied the space.

“This comedy club will be much smaller, more neighborhood Kansas City,” Glazer said.

In other Legends Outlets updates, the opening of The Lawn, a community space featuring a large green space, jumbo LED screen and other amenities, has been pushed back to spring 2018 with construction starting in early 2018.

Winstead’s Metcalf closes

Winstead’s has quietly closed at 8036 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park.

The location was still listed on its website Aug. 22 but a sign on the door says,”Due to the sale of the real estate at this location, Winstead’s Metcalf store will be closing Monday, July 31, 2017.”

Officials with Haddad Restaurant Group did not return phone calls.

Twenty-five years ago, there were more than a dozen Winstead’s listed for the metro. Now its website lists half a dozen restaurants. A Merriam location closed in January.
